The ancient city of Matera is steeped in history and is home to the famous Sassi, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back over 7000 years.
Its origins are very remote, which is why it is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
The famous Sassi are two districts that make up the old part of the city, spread out in two valleys, separated from each other by the rocky spur of the Civita.
The Sasso Barisano, the hub of the old city, is the richest of carved portals and friezes that hide its underground heart.
The Sasso Caveoso instead assumes vaguely the form of a theatrical cavea, from which perhaps takes its name.
At the center is the Civita, a rocky spur that separates the two Sassi, on whose top there are the Cathedral and the noble palaces.
